Seeing the South
After a 3 hour ferry ride from the North to South Island...
(which of course was filled with great scenery), we decided to head to the town of Nelson. Our book described an "exhilarating" walk along a rocky peninsula just outside the town. A short drive brought us to the beginning of the walk. The start of the walk wasn't really all that impressive since it was right next to a sewage treatment plant and dotted with "no swimming" signs. Hmmm...maybe the author found the chance of being splashed with poo exhilarating. We walked out to sea for about an hour and decided to turn back. It was pretty in a desolate sort of way, but I expected more action such as crashing waves and wind...oh well.
We continued down to the Central West Coast of the South Island (whoa, that's a lot of directions!).
This coast has numerous limestone caves, cliffs, and other formations...

The main highlight was the "blowholes". Waves crash in and out of the caves along the coast and force water into the air...so it kinda looks and sounds like whales' blowholes. Our journey then continued on to Christchurch, which was filled with mystical wonders...

Lovely photos, and finally, an explanation of a blowhole that makes sense. :-)
